Republicans Propose Stripping Some Americans of Birthright Citizenship

Republicans want to deport all sorts of people from America, usually for racist reasons. Now they want to ‘deport’… Americans?!

A Bill to Do What?!

Incorrigible readers of this Crummy Little Blog That Nobody Reads will recall we’ve repeatedly screamed in frustration at the naked racism of Republican attempts to deport people. For example, the proposal to deport Native Americans ^[1] is incredibly stupid, given that Native Americans have a superior claim to a North American birthright than anyone else!

But one should never assume one has found the bottom of right-wing stupidity!

For example, this genius: Rep H Morgan Griffith (R-VA 9). He has introduced a bill into the House, HR 9724 (“End Birthright Citizenship for Territories Act”) ^[2], which would drastically change birthright citizenship for Americans born in these US territories:

• Puerto Rico,
• the US Virgin Islands,
• Guam,
• the Northern Mariana Islands.

And by “change”, we mean eliminate US citizenship for anyone born there after 2027-Jan-01!

Children born in those US territories would become, more or less, stateless. One presumes they would not be exempt from US taxation, or US laws, or… anything else, really. Just not US citizens, and not citizens of anywhere else in particular. Probably unable to travel at all, lacking any passports.

Go on, read the bill. It’s only about a page long.

Need I point out that the residents of these territories would be unlikely to be considered sufficiently “white” by the standards of the white supremacists currently running the Republican party?

It just keeps going on: they want to restrict voting so much, and make it so hard, that only their white conservative rural voters can do it.

For example, the sheer venom for everything outside the US makes Republicans want to disenfranchise American citizens who live abroad. Democracy Docket reports ^[3] that the Republican National Committee itself is trying to get the state of Nebraska to do exactly that: nullify the votes of Americans who live overseas, but vote through former residence in Nebraska. It’s just an insane level of hatred for anything with a whiff of the outside world that makes them want to discard legal votes of American citizens just because they happen to live abroad at election time.

The Weekend Conclusion

Now, it’s true that in Congress any representative can file a bill on any subject, at any time, for any reason. And they do! Most of those bills go nowhere, legislatively. They are purely a virtue signaling mechanism to exhibit the beliefs of the legislator before voters and other politicians.

So this will almost certainly not become law.

But… consider: this venomous hatred of anything outside their narrow definition of American is what they want to signal. They think this is virtue.
